GSI in Santa Fe

The City of Santa Fe encourages the use of GSI to treat runoff as a resource, infiltrating rainfall as close to the source as possible.

Since the 1990s, the City has mandated onsite stormwater detention for private development to mitigate offsite erosion. Evolving research highlighted the advantages of infiltrating rainwater into multifunctioning landscapes so, in 2016, the City adopted Resolution No. 2016-25 supporting the use of infiltration through GSI practices on public and private land. This resolution spurred a planning process culminating in the Governing Body’s 2019 approval of the City of Santa Fe Stormwater Management Strategic Plan (Resolution No. 2016-25). Since then, other City plans have been adopted that further solidify the City's commitment to using green stormwater infrastructure to reduce flooding and erosion and to make the best use of our limited potable water resources.

GSI is utilized in Santa Fe by private residents and businesses as well as public entities such as the City, County, State, and NMDOT to capture roof or road runoff. The map below shows where existing public GSI is located throughout the City, primarily along roadways and in City parks. We have also created a self-guided walking guide of GSI in downtown Santa Fe: Downtown Santa Fe GSI Walking Tour.

Residents can apply for rebates on their utility bill  for rain water catchment through the Conservation and Sustainability Division. Residents can also apply to get a rain garden installed in the roadside verge through the River & Watershed Section's Runoff to Roots Program.
